The number of female same-sex couples in the U.S. has surpassed male couples for the first time

According to new data from the United States Census Bureau, the structure of same-sex households in the country has shifted. While gay male couples predominated in the 2005 census, cohabiting female same-sex couples have now become more numerous. In total, such households have reached 1.4 million, accounting for about 1% of all families in the United States.

The number of officially married couples has also increased significantly. Since nationwide legalization, the number of married same-sex couples has grown from 392,000 in 2005 to over 836,000 in 2024. Currently, around 60% of same-sex couples living together are in legally registered marriages.
