eClinicalMedicine has published a study on the risks posed by phthalates — synthetic chemicals found in toys, food containers, and cosmetics. Researchers identified a link between exposure to these substances and nearly 2 million cases of preterm birth, as well as 74,000 newborn deaths worldwide in 2018 alone.
Phthalates are described as “ubiquitous” because they are used to make plastics more flexible and to stabilize fragrances in perfumes, deodorants, and lotions. Scientists suggest that these chemicals may disrupt placental function and trigger inflammatory processes, leading to premature uterine contractions.
Beyond risks to infants, phthalates have also been associated with obesity, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Previous data further indicate increased mortality among adults aged 55–64 due to prolonged exposure to these compounds.
