Women in leadership are more likely to fire employees for violence against colleagues

Companies where women hold a significant share of leadership positions respond differently to cases of violence in the workplace. According to an analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, such organizations are significantly more likely to dismiss male employees accused of physical or sexual violence. In contrast, in companies dominated by male leadership, it is often the victims who lose their jobs after such incidents.

The research also found that male perpetrators are more likely to be dismissed for abusive behavior toward male colleagues than for similar actions against women. At the same time, women who experience violence are more likely to leave their positions, reduce their working hours, and face long-term income loss.

Five years after experiencing violence, a survivor’s income remains on average 17% lower than before the incident. More broadly, in the United Kingdom, women’s unemployment rates are directly linked to a higher risk of domestic violence due to financial vulnerability.
