Billboard Hot 100 data for 2025 highlights a significant gap between the number of women on stage and those working behind the scenes. While the share of women artists has increased compared to 2012, there has been a regression in songwriting and music production.
Women make up 36.1% of artists on the charts. The highest representation is in pop music (36.9%), while the lowest is in hip-hop (16.1%).
Only 14.5% of songwriters are women — a notable drop from 19.5% in 2023.
Production remains the most closed field. In 2025, just 4.4% of producers are women. The average over the past 13 years stands at 3.6%.
