The administration of the United States has intervened in the case of 23-year-old Spanish citizen Noelia Castillo, who recently died through assisted suicide. The U.S. Department of State has requested that its embassy in Madrid investigate the circumstances leading up to the procedure.
Washington has raised concerns about “systemic human rights violations” and alleged inaction by Spanish police. Castillo was a survivor of gang rape. US officials claim that the perpetrators may have been migrants and argue that Spain’s “lenient legislation” allowed them to avoid accountability.
Additionally, US representatives state that in the final hours of her life, Castillo allegedly “expressed doubts” that were ignored by medical professionals. However, Castillo had previously secured the legal right to die through the European Court of Human Rights, despite objections from her father. She stated that she wished to die with dignity following a spinal cord injury and paralysis resulting from the rape and a subsequent suicide attempt.
The procedure was carried out on March 26 in Sant Pere de Ribes.
